Kosterjoki is a small river in Finnish Lapland. It is a tributary to Värriojoki (River Värriö), which in turn is a tributary to Kemijoki (River Kemi), one of the largest rivers in Northern Finland. Kosterjoki is located in the municipality of Savukoski. It is way out in the Lapland wilderness. The river's origin is near a fell (hill) named Kostertunturi. I will visit this place soon and will try to get a photo of the stream. Maybe I will also catch a glimpse of some reindeer, as this place is very close to Santa Claus' home in Korvatunturi. Santa himself is probably working at his office in Rovaniemi, capital of Lapland, some 200 km southwest. This time of the year Lapland is full of mosquitoes (quite safe, no malaria or dengue on these latitudes) and I have to be careful not to be eaten up by those bloodthirsty little beasts. Peter

It took a while to find in in the middle of the Lapland wilderness, but with the help of geocoordinates on this page and my trusty GPS, it was rather easy. As suspected, the area had lots of reindeer herding. Many reindeer were babies, born in May or early June. Most of the animals were happily walking the forest road when we encountered them. The river itself had a fairly new-looking bridge over it. The water was pure and crystal clear, as is normal with these small rivers flowing from a nearby mountain. Great place to relax and - surprise - no mosquitoes at all! Cheers! Peter
